Aston Martin has confirmed that it's continuing work on an SUV rival to the upcoming Bentley EXP 9 F. The car will be loosely based on the Lagonda concept that was shown at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show. That concept was heavily criticized for its appearance, but the production model will be completely restyled.
In common with the 2009 showcar, the new SUV will be based on the running gear of the Mercedes GL-Class. Aston admits that a deal is in place for Mercedes to supply platforms and drivetrains. This deal will even extend to the engines. While Aston is likely to offer its familiar 6.0-liter V12 in a flagship model, a range of smaller, Mercedes-sourced gas, diesel and hybrid models will also be offered.
With Bentley and even Lamborghini readying luxury performance SUVs, Aston may feel that it no longer needs to take on the risk and expense of relaunching a half-forgotten name. Mercedes' own experience with Maybach is a lesson in how difficult it can be to relaunch a luxury brand.
