After the new 911 Carrera in both Coupe and Convertible body styles, and the latest Boxster roadster, Porsche revealed a new iteration of its third sports car series at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2014 Cayman.
Based on the new Boxster, the Cayman has been reengineered from the ground up and features a lightweight body design making it up to 30kg / 66 pounds lighter than the car it replaces, a 40 per cent stiffer body and more powerful and efficient flat-six engines that offer better performance as well as p to 15 percent greater fuel economy.
At 172.4 inches long, 70.9 inches wide and 50.9 inches tall, the Cayman Mk2 (Mk3 if you ask Porsche which considers the 2009 facelift a separate series) is lower and longer than its predecessor, while it also has a longer wheelbase at 97.4 inches and wider tracks.
As we've mentioned previously, it's also better looking that the outgoing Cayman, not only due to the modified proportions, but also thanks to a sleeker roofline and more heavily angled tailgate.
The new Cayman is powered by the same powerplants as the Boxster, but tweaked to produce an additional 10hp more a piece.
In particular, the base model features a 2.7-liter flat six replacing the older 2.9-liter unit delivering 271-horses (275PS) and allowing for a 0-100km/h (62mph) acceleration time of 5.7 seconds with the standard six-speed manual, 5.6 seconds with the PDK dual-clutch unit or 5.4 seconds when opted with the Sport Chrono package.
The sportier Cayman S gets a 3.4-liter flat-six delivering 321hp (325PS) for a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of 5.0 sec with the manual gearbox, while the PDK does the same in 4.9 seconds and 4.7 seconds when equipped with the Sport Chrono package.
In the U.S., the new Cayman will hit showrooms in Spring 2013 starting at $52,600 for the Cayman and $63,800 for the Cayman S, excluding a destination charge of $950.
Across the pond, the Cayman is priced from £39,694 in the UK (€68,460 in Ireland), and the Cayman S from £48,783 (€84,136 in Ireland).
